Crash Shears Off Hydrant in Sylmar

A section of San Fernando Road is blocked in Sylmar after a crash sheared a hydrant shooting water into power lines. Two women were injured in the crash.

A speeding sedan sheared a fire hydrant in Sylmar Wednesday and knocked down several power poles, leaving two young women in critical condition, authorities said.

Los Angeles Fire Department firefighters went to 14700 Bleeker St. near San Fernando Road around 1:30 a.m. and located the gold sedan that slammed into the hydrant, sending water shooting up into power lines and creating a possible electrical hazard, said Nicholas Prange of the Los Angeles Fire Department. They extricated the two women, one 18 and the other 20, from the wreckage of the one-vehicle crash and transported them to a hospital in critical condition.

Crews had received reports of at least two more patients, but none were located, Prange said.

Repair crews from the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power worked to repair the power lines, he said.
