The shooting was reported just after 2 a.m. in the 300 block of Ocean Front Walk on the Venice boardwalk, LAPD officials said.

A man in his 20s was pronounced dead at the scene by LAFD paramedics and another in his 40s was shot in the leg and treated at a hospital, LAPD Sgt. Barry Montgomery said. A man who owns hotel near where the shooting took place suffered a head injury.

Friends identified the victim as Shakespeare. He was described as a peaceful person who helped others.

Police said an altercation broke out on the boardwalk before shots were fired.

Witnesses said the fight took place in front of the Cadillac Hotel.

The shooter was last seen getting into a dark SUV and driving southbound, Montgomery said.
