Crews Race to Repair Laurel Canyon Boulevard After Water Main Break

A water main ruptured Thursday in Studio City, forcing closures on the route between West Hollywood and the San Fernando Valley

Repair crews worked through the night on a ruptured 18-inch water main along Laurel Canyon Boulevard in Studio City, where lanes were closed during the morning drive.

The ruptured main was reported about 7 a.m. Thursday, the DWP said. The resulting flood of water forced the closure of Laurel Canyon Boulevard between Mulholland Drive and Ventura Boulevard, according to the city Department of Transportation.

Video from NewsChopper4 showed a stream of water rushing down the curving road, a connection between the San Fernando Valley and West Hollywood. The closure turned the Thursday morning rush hour into a nightmare for scores of drivers, many of whom inched their way to Coldwater Canyon in search of an alternate route.

Once pipe repairs were completed, crews had to repair the damaged street. One lane of Laurel Canyon Boulevard was reopened in either direction Thursday afternoon, according to DWP spokeswoman Mia Rose Wong.

All lanes reopened Friday.

No customers experienced service disruptions because of the break, she said.
