LA’s fleet of taxis is starting to go green. Really Green. The Bell Cab company began adding bright green Toyota Priuses to its fleet this week. Councilwoman Wendy Greuel is behind a move to slowly convert the taxi fleet to more environment-friendly vehicles.

The Prius runs on both gas and electric and can achieve up to 48 miles per gallon depending on conditions. The vehicles produce a fraction of the smog and greenhouse gases of current taxis.

Bell Cab put two Toyota Priuses into service with more to be added soon. The company hopes to keep adding as many as two a month.
