Heavy Aerial Attack Protects Upland Neighborhood From Wildfire

UPLAND, Calif. -- Firefighters battled a wildfire in rugged terrain Thursday afternoon in the Upland area, according to the San Bernardino County Fire Department.

The fire in the San Antonio Heights area above Upland started at about 2 p.m., fire officials said. The blaze burned away from homes at the base of the hillside.

Water-dropping helicopters and at least one fixed-wing aircraft accompanied ground units. Some units are dropping Foscheck -- a red fire retardant.

Authorities have not determined the cause of the fire, which burned away from homes.

At 4 p.m., the fire scorched 120 acres.
