Cockroach Infestation Shuts Down Popular Rainbow Bar in West Hollywood

Eight dead cockroaches and seven live cockroaches were found near the cook line, according to the LA County Department of Public Health's report.

A hangout for celebrities and rock stars and the iconic filming spot for Guns N' Roses' "Estranged" music video in West Hollywood called the Rainbow Bar has been temporarily shut down due to a cockroach infestation, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health confirmed Monday.

Eight dead cockroaches and seven live cockroaches were found total, including several near the cook line, according to the LA County Department of Public Health's report.

"You name anyone in the history of rock 'n' roll — they’ve all been in the club," Ozzy Osborne said in a documentary film about the bar called "Welcome to the Rainbow."

The Rainbow Bar & Grill, a piece of LA’s history since 1972, sits on the Sunset Strip, located at 9015 Sunset Boulevard.

Cleaning crews worked Monday after the Department of Public Health shut down the bar and grill Wednesday due to "critical violations."

"We heard it on social media," said Jason Swing, a customer. "[It’s] disappointing but at the same time, I’m not surprised because of the way it looks."

The main issues with the bar's violations included the "harborage of animals, birds, and vermin, rodents and insects," the report stated, specifically noting the dead and live cockroaches.

Other health issues included contaminated foods or drinks, including a bottle of wine that was stored inside the ice bin together with ice.

Tomato slices were also not the proper temperature inside of the refrigerator, the report stated.

Towels for wiping down counters were not placed in a sanitizing bucket, but rather left on countertops.

There was also grease and dust buildup, according to the report.

The majority of customers that spoke with NBC4 were forgiving, saying the Rainbow’s long-standing reputation outweighs one failed health inspection.

"The food’s pretty good," said customer Julie Asperger. "It seems clean. I’ve never seen any bugs anywhere."

The owner of the Rainbow Bar said they planned to reopen Thursday.
