Beetle Blasts Through OC DUI Checkpoint, Crashes Into Barrier at 100 MPH

A driver who accelerated through an Orange County DUI checkpoint instead of stopping survived crashing into a nearby construction barrier at an estimated speed of 100 mph, police said.

The woman driving the newer-model Volkswagen Beetle extricated from the car by firefighters using the jaws of life at a construction site on Orangethorpe Avenue east of the 57 Freeway, according to the Placentia Police Department.

The woman sped through the checkpoint at about 1 a.m. at over 50 mph, then accelerated down Orangethorpe before slamming into the barrier. The street was closed for the construction of a railroad overpass, police said.

The woman was in critical condition at a nearby hospital, Anaheim police told the Placentia Police Department.
