Man Booked on Suspicion of DUI After Smashing Car Backwards Into Downey Library

The driver had just been released from custody in connection with a previous traffic violation

This crime story has a twist stranger that fiction.

Shortly after a man was released from police custody for a traffic warrant, he crashed backwards into a library in Downey and was arrested again early Thursday. This time, on suspicion of driving under the influence.

The crash occurred at 1:33 a.m. at Downey City Library on Brookshire Avenue, according Downey police Sgt. Mark Haxton. The driver crashed the car into the wall, smashing into shelves and damaging the building, police said.

Video showed books and shelves scattered in piles on the library floor.

The driver was arrested by Downey police the night before. Shortly after he was released, he crashed into the library, Sgt. Mike Tarino said.

The library is just down the street from the police station.

There were no reported injuries.
