Hundreds of mourners took part in vigil tonight for a woman whose body was recovered Tuesday from an area where a fatal boat crash took place two days prior. Beverly White reports for the NBC4 News at 11 p.m. on Friday, June 16, 2017.
Hundreds gathered Friday for a solemn vigil in Marina del Rey for a 31-year-old woman who died in a boat crash over the weekend in Lake Havasu.
Arizona authorities found 31-year-old Jennifer Renee Martin's body in the waters Tuesday, three days after a speeding boat crashed, flipped and threw several people into the lake.
In a beachfront memorial complete with candles and white balloons, loved ones remembered Jennifer as someone who "loved life."
"Jennifer loved people, she loved life," said Cynthia Fields, her mother. "We're going to miss Jennifer."
Mohave County Sheriff's officials say witnesses called 911 about 8 p.m. June 10 to say several people were thrown into the water from a 35-foot twin-motor boat. People on another boat rescued some of the victims, including an unconscious man who was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead. He was identified by sheriff's officials as 51-year-old Bruce Buchanan of Redondo Beach, California.
Sheriff's officials said alcohol appears to be a factor in the crash, which remains under investigation. The driver of the boat was cooperating with authorities.
The family said the tragedy could have been prevented and urged people to take precautions before going out to the water.
