Having a Blue Whale of a Time

Whale watchers are on high alert Monday after two recent blue whale sightings.

A lone blue whale was spotted off Redondo Beach on Monday. A second sighting -- possibly the same whale -- was seen Sunday in the same area.

The sightings were about three to four miles off the coast, and three kayakers on Sunday got a very up-close look at the largest mammal known on earth.

Blue whales weigh about 80 tons and run as long as 85 feet.

A pod of these creatures have been hanging out for the last few weeks outside King Harbor in search of krill, the main food source for these giant creatures.

This has led enterprising tour boat owners to offer whale watches to the public.

Very few people in this area have ever seen blue whales since they were almost hunted to extinction a few years ago.

Now, they’ve been spotted within a mile or two of shore and the tours are filling up.
