Someone has recently been passing counterfeit $100 bills in the San Fernando Valley area, and police urge vendors to carefully examine large bills given as payment.
The fakes, which were used to make purchases at several stores over the past few days, were presented as $100 bills, said Marty Fentress of the Los Angeles Police Department Topanga station.
"The bills that were used were actually $5 bills that had been bleached and then made to look like a $100 bill," said Fentress. "These bills, when held to the light, you can still see a faint Abraham Lincoln from the original bill."
Police urged the public to carefully examine any $100 bills presented as payment.
