A man is in critical condition after falling nearly 40 feet into the Santa Ana River bed when he was trying to cross a street near the Honda Center in Anaheim Friday, police said.
According to officials, the man jumped over a short wall to cross Katella Avenue but did not realize there was a gap. He fell and landed in a river bed. A passerby saw the fall and called 911.

Timothy Neunuebel was near the area when the man fell, and said he could hear the lights and commotion as emergency personnel responded.
"Somebody apparently thought this bridge was solid all the way across," Neunuebel said.
Rescue crews arrived on scene and transported the man to a local hospital. The man is in serious condition.
It is unknown whether alcohol was a factor in the fall. It is believed that the man was leaving from the Anaheim Ducks hockey game, but that has not been confirmed.
