Vice President Mike Pence to Bolster Republican Coffers Ahead of Midterm at Malibu Fundraiser

The brunch fundraiser in Malibu is part of a three-day California trip

Vice President Mike Pence's three-day Southern California visit continued Sunday with a fundraiser aimed at bolstering Republican Party coffers ahead of the upcoming midterm elections.

Pence and House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Bakersfield, will headline a fundraising brunch at noon at the Malibu home of lawyer and financier Marc Stern and his wife, Eva, according to an invitation posted on the political news website Politico. Tickets for the event start at $10,000 per couple, according to the invitation. Other ticket packages are available for $25,000, $50,000 and $100,000 per couple.

Some of those packages also include tickets to a roundtable discussion with Pence scheduled for 5 p.m. Monday at an undisclosed location in Beverly Hills.

According to the invitation obtained by Politico, the events will benefit "Protect the House," a fundraising collaboration that includes Pence's Leadership PAC and the National Republican Congressional Committee to benefit 20 Republican House members considered "vulnerable" in the November midterm elections.

"The House has made a lot of progress since the 2016 election, but we must continue to show that the Trump-Pence agenda is working by keeping the House Majority," according to the invitation.

McCarthy is considered a strong contender to replace Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wisconsin, who is stepping down as Speaker of the House.

On Saturday, the vice president toured NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory and later posted photos and comments about his visit to the laboratory.

"Inspiring visit to Jet Propulsion Laboratory! Thanks to the team at @NASAJPL for your leadership in unmanned space exploration since 1957! Under @POTUS Trump, America is leading in space again!," he said in a post on Twitter.

The visit comes one week before the launch of NASA's next mission to Mars dubbed InSight, short for Interior Exploration using Seismic Investigations, Godesay and Heat Transport. The mission, which was originally scheduled for March 2016, will be the first to peer deep beneath the Martian surface, studying the planet's interior by measuring its heat output and listening for marsquakes, seismic events similar to earthquakes.

InSight will be the first planetary mission to take off from the West Coast, launching from Space Launch Complex-3 at Vandenberg Air Force Base near Lompoc.

Pence is the chairman of the National Space Council.

During October's first meeting of the Council in 25 years, Pence said, "We won the race to the moon a half a century ago, and now we will win the 21st Century in space. Under President Trump's leadership and with the guidance of this National Space Council, the United States will usher in a new era of space leadership for our nation that will benefit every facet of our national life."

On Dec. 11, 2017, Trump signed Space Policy Directive 1, which will refocus America's space program on human exploration and discovery.

Trump has set goals of returning to the moon for the first time since 1972 and establishing "a foundation for an eventual mission to Mars."

However, as Pence toured the facility, a vocal group of protesters gathered outside shouting slogans advocating the removal of the Trump Administration and questioning its commitment to science and technology, especially its rollback of efforts to combat climate change .

Another protest group, calling itself Refuse Fascism, has announced plans for a demonstration Sunday just prior to Pence's Malibu fundraiser.

Before concluding his Southland visit Monday, Pence will review progress on construction of a fence along the U.S.-Mexico border and meet with Border Patrol agents and Department of Homeland Security employees, according to a White House statement.

Pence toured the Rio Grande Valley section of the proposed wall near McAllen, Texas in February. In March, President Donald Trump toured the border wall prototypes in San Diego's Otay Mesa community.
