Pop-Up Clinics in LA County Aimed At Vaccinating Eligible Individuals for Monkeypox

In an effort to try and increase vaccination rates for monkeypox LA County will be hosting pop-up clinics around the county where eligible individuals can receive the vaccine.

NBC Universal, Inc. Gov. Newsom has recently declared a state of emergency over monkey as confirmed cases continue to rise.

As COVID is still going strong in Southern California there is now a new public health emergency on top of the two-year-old pandemic.

Gov. Newsom has declared a state of emergency over monkeypox as cities and counties are working to bring in as many vaccines as possible.

The emergency declaration was made in many ways to give the state and health officials a chance to get ahead of this.

"I think just as we saw with COVID, the sooner we act the better," said Jayce Swallow a Beverly Hills resident.

As of 9 a.m. Monday there were 400 confirmed cases of monkeypox in LA County. The increase in confirmed cases prompted the LA Board of Supervisors Chair Holly Mitchell to issue a proclamation of local emergency. The board will vote on this matter Tuesday.

The actions of the state and county levels are aimed at cutting red tape.

West Hollywood City Councilmember John Erickson issued a series of tweets announcing a pop-up vaccination clinic that will launch Wednesday at the West Hollywood Library Community Meeting Room.

"This is going to help us get quicker access to vaccines, more testing, and better accessibility from the federal government," Erickson said. "Right now we need to make sure that the president and the FDA are giving us the much-needed vaccines."

No information about the clinic has not yet been posted by county public health officials.

"Because I've worked in public health for so long and as soon as I found out this virus was on the scene and there was a vaccine I was like 'where can I get it,'" said Jack Davis a resident in West Hollywood. "I called my PCP, he had no idea where I could get it and I called the county and they had no idea where I could get it."

A monkeypox schedule indicating walk-up clinics will be open at the Balboa Sports Complex, Market Street Center, Ted Watkins Memorial Park, and Obregon Park was posted.

Individuals must meet eligibility requirements and times for each clinic differ. Use this link to check for updates.

"I think one of the hardest issues is accessibility and being where the people who need the vaccine the most can have easy access to it," Swallow said. "I think it's a great idea."

Other residents eligible to get vaccinated will not have a clinic operating in their neighborhood.

Just last week West Hollywood held a community meeting about monkeypox and late last month the LA County Department of Public Health expanded eligibility for getting vaccinated.

The vaccines will be given by appointment only as the demand for the vaccine is greater than the supply.
