Police fatally shot a gunman who was believed to have killed his own mother and ridden a tractor through a Simi Valley neighborhood, firing his weapon, Saturday night.
The bizarre incident unfolded about 4:45 p.m. on Saturday, when a man called police to report that his brother had shot and killed their mother at her home in the 1100 block of Mellow Lane, according to Simi Valley police Commander Stephanie Shannon.
Authorities rushed to the scene and found that the house was on fire.
The 29-year-old suspect, whose name was not released, fled on a tractor, Shannon said. He drove it behind the house and onto a horsetrail that led into another neighborhood about two blocks away on Ezra Hill Drive.
"When officers got on scene, they were confronted with a deadly force situation (which) resulted in a suspect being shot by our officers," Shannon said.
Officers had responded to the suspect's home in 2008 for a mental health emergency, officials said.
Before officers killed the suspected gunman, Norm Trevina, a neighbor, said he stumbled across the shooter on the street.

"He looked at me with the gun," Trevina said. "He could have shot me. He just stared at me with this really weird look on his face."
