A Rancho Penasquitos woman fought back against an attacker in her own home while her children were asleep in their bedrooms nearby.

The incident happened around 1:30 a.m. near Rancho Penasquitos Boulevard and Via Del Sud Road. Police said the woman was awakened by an unknown male trying to sexually assault her.

“To be honest with you, the only thing I thought about was what's going to happen to my kids when I die. Because I knew this is it,” said the victim.

The victim told NBC 7 that she woke up with a gun to her head then the suspect sexually threatened her.

The victim said he hit and pushed her, but then she started to defend herself.

The victim believes he may have gotten in through her 5-year-old daughter's window. Her 13-year-old son was also home at the time.

“I was extremely scared. I started yelling ‘No, no!’ I tried to yell so that my son or neighbor would hear me,” she said.

That's when the man ran away and she dialed 911.

Detectives spent hours combing through physical evidence, like fingerprints left on the window and DNA.

The victim says she's not going to let him scare her into moving.

“I was like no I'm not going to leave the area," she said. "I'll put extra locks, not leave the area."

It is NBC 7’s policy not to identify victims of sexual crimes.

Investigators described the suspect as a man with a thin build, between 5-foot-9 and 5-foot-11. He was wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt, a striped shirt and dark shorts.

Police said the suspect used a cloth to cover his face during the incident.
