Racing Resumes in Fontana After Amateur Driver's Death

The woman was killed Friday during a simulated Indy car race at Auto Club Speedway

Racing resumed at Auto Club Speedway after a woman was killed during a simulated race for amateur drivers.

On Friday, racing was briefly suspended after 24-year-old Ashley Sara Phalen's vehicle hit the flipped during the Mario Andretti Racing Experience, which allows the public to drive replica Indy cars. The class teaches drivers the basics of open wheel racing/

Speedway spokesman David Talley told City News Service that Phalen had taken a class before getting into the car and was in radio contact with her instructors while she drove. The Press-Enterprise reported Phalen, of Los Angeles, struck an inside wall and the car  overturned.

The San Bernardino County coroner's office said Phalen was later declared dead at Kaiser Foundation Hospital.

"Our thoughts and prayers go to the family," Talley told the Press-Enterprise. "Obviously we'll keep a keen eye on safety as these classes continue. Andretti has a great track record and so do the other schools. It's just an unfortunate thing."
