Police Stop “Thelma and Louise”-Style Crime Spree

Police say two women went on a wild "Thelma and Louise''-style crime spree, but it didn't end with a car going over a cliff like the film.

Instead, officers captured both women and they remain behind bars.

"I want to introduce you to our version of 'Thelma and Louise.' Two women that went on a crime spree," said Captain Blake Chow of the LAPD. "We ended up catching through good old-fashioned police work, good old-ashioned detective work."

Police say that Myra Lopez and Latascha Bulmer went on a six-day string of carjackings, purse-snatchings and holdups after
fleeing an El Monte halfway house over the Labor Day weekend.  The women had met at a prison in Chowchilla. The crime spree took place in Downtown Los AngelesVenice and other locations throughout Southern California.

Police say the duo carjacked a woman in a minivan.  Officers were able to track down the minivan using the department's so-called "Smart Car" that is equipped with a special camera. It can quickly read hundreds of license plates. Police say Lopez was wearing stolen diamond earrings when she  was stopped last week on Skid Row in the minivan containing loot, including computers and a jewelry box filled with Mexican silver. Bulmer was arrested the next day.

Investigators say there could be more victims out there and have released photos of the female suspects.

"I’d like people to take a good look at their faces and think back to see if you can remember if you saw something we need to know about,” said Captain Chow.

Both women are behind bars after pleading not guilty to robbery and carjacking. Lopez also was charged with burglary.
