A police pursuit in El Sereno ended in a crash that killed an innocent bystander and injuring four others on Saturday, June 1, 2013. The fleeing driver was taken into custody. Tena Ezzeddine reports from El Sereno on NBC4 News at 4:30 p.m.

A police pursuit ended in a deadly crash that killed an innocent bystander and injured four others in the El Sereno area of East Los Angeles, officials said.

The crash was reported after 2 p.m. on Saturday in the 5300 block of Poplar Boulevard, said Katherine Main, a Los Angeles Fire Department spokeswoman.

Paramedics found one person dead at the scene. Three men and a woman were taken to a hospital.

One man was in serious condition. The others were in fair condition, Main said.

The pursuit began after police spotted a reckless driver in an SUV, authorities said. The pursuit lasted five minutes until the SUV struck a truck and another car.

The SUV driver climbed out of the wreckage and began running. Police chased down and arrested the driver, who suffered injuries after a police dog bit him, authorities said.

Authorities were investigating whether the SUV was stolen.
