Known Gang Member Arrested in LA Park Bathroom Rape, Police Say

A 27-year-old man has been arrested in the sexual assault of a woman in a park bathroom in Los Angeles, police said Tuesday.

Edgar Lobos was taken into custody less than 24 hours after the rape was reported at Lincoln Park the night before.

The 31-year-old woman told investigators she was walking past a public restroom at Lincoln Park around noon Tuesday when a man forced her into the bathroom at gunpoint, attacked her, then fled, the Los Angeles Police Department said.

The victim and people who were in the area at the time provided police a description that included distinctive tattoos. That led investigators to identify the man by 10 p.m., and he was arrested early Tuesday morning, police said.

At an afternoon news conference, police said the attacker is a known gang member with a lengthy criminal history that included vandalism and domestic violence. He was on probation after serving time behind bars for drug possession, and was only out of jail for 12 hours when the rape occurred, Capt. William Hayes said.

At the time of Lobos' arrest, he had a small caliber handgun which police said they believed was the same gun used in the crime. He was being held on $1 million bail. He faces charges of kidnap and rape.

The woman was recovering.
