Fatal Officer Shooting Temporarily Shuts Down Metro Station in Boyle Heights

One person was fatally struck by officer gunfire in Boyle Heights early Saturday, prompting an hourslong closure of the Metro Gold Line Soto Station, according to police and Metro officials.

The shooting occurred after midnight, according to the Los Angeles Police Department Hollenbeck station.

Police said officers on patrol heard gunshots coming from the area of First and Breed streets. As they drove toward the area, they "encountered a suspect coming away from the area of the gunshots," LAPD said in a statement.

They tried to stop the person and a shooting occurred, the statement read. The person was declared dead at the scene.

No officers were injured.

A gun was recovered at the scene, according to police. Additional details about the incident were not immediately available.

The Metro Gold Line Soto Station was closed due to police activity, according to Metro Spokesman Jose Ubaldo.

Just after 10:30 a.m., Metro tweeted Gold Line trains were "resuming normal service to all stations."

During the closure, Metro established a bus shuttle service for riders traveling from the Mariachi Plaza station to the Indiana station, Ubaldo said. Commuters traveling from Atlantic Station to Union Station were not expected to have problems.

Riders also were urged to use the Metro bus line 30 to get to their destinations.
