Man Sentenced to Year in Jail for Hit-and-Run That Killed 4-Year-Old Girl

Nearly one year after a fatal hit-and-run, driver pleads no contest and gets 360 days in jail plus three years probation

A Glendale man who fatally struck a 4-year-old girl with his car 11 months ago was sentenced to one year in county jail and three years of probation Tuesday, prosecutors said.

Shant Badleean, 56, pleaded no contest to one felony count of hit-and-run driving resulting in death. He was immediately sentenced to 360 days in jail, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office.

Badleean's driving privileges were suspended for six months.

Badleean, who will start serving his sentence on May 2, turned himself in one day after the hit-and-run incident that occurred in Glendale on March 6, 2015.

That afternoon, 4-year-old Violeta Khachaturyan ran after her mother and onto East Wilson Street when she was struck by Badleean's sedan and sent flying into another parked vehicle. The DA's office said Badleean drove away and did not try to help.

The night of his surrender, people of the Glendale community held a vigil for Khachaturyan where loved ones prayed, sang and burned incense to commemorate her life. Mourners left flowers, candies and stuffed animals.

"I believe she is in heaven playing with the angels right now," neighbor Mases Allhiveirdia said at the time.
