Grandmother Killed by Hit-and-Run Driver Maneuvering in Reverse

A hit-and-run driver, maneuvering in reverse after rear-ending a school bus in South LA, jumped the curb and fatally struck a grandmother, police said.

The Ford Explorer was heading north on Normandie Avenue about 6:30 a.m. Thursday when it hit an unoccupied school bus from behind at 76th Street, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. The driver put the SUV in reverse, drove around the bus and onto the curb, striking the grandmother who was on the sidewalk.

The driver fled, making no attempt to help the victim.

The woman, identified by her granddaughter as 65-year-old Lucia Alejandro of Guatemala, was taken to the hospital, where she died of her injuries.

Police were asking for the public's help in identifying the driver of the dark-colored, four-door Ford Explorer. A $50,000 reward was being offered.

Anyone with information was asked to call police at 323-421-2500 during business hours, or 1-877-LAPD-24-7.
