Large Tree Falls on Hancock Park House, Crushes Driveway Gate

The tree left a crack in the wall than ran from ceiling to floor in the home

A large tree damaged the wall of a Hancock Park house when it fell early Wednesday onto the property, crushing the an iron driveway gate.

No injuries were reported at the home in the 500 block of North Cahuenga Boulevard. The tree fell at about 11 p.m. when residents were awakened by a crash.

At least one large branch came to rest on the house and cracked a wall from ceiling to floor. The tree also blocked the family's cars in the driveway when another branch landed on an iron gate.

It was not immediately clear when it will be removed.

Residents called the tree "an emergency in the making."

"It was tilting more and more," said resident Bob Ingram. "It was starting to tilt sideways. It was decayed, it was dying.

"I feel like we tried to kind of do something about this."

Ingram said he first contacted the city about the tree as early as 2014. The family showed NBC4 a Bureau of Street Services request form dated October 2014 in which they indicated "Help is needed immediately."

According to a spokesperson for Councilman David Ryu, who represents the area, a motion was filed Jan. 13 to removed the tree that fell along with a few others of concern in the area.

The tree is one of several that toppled in Southern California over the last few days, which included strong wind gusts due to winter storms. It was not immediately clear whether wind caused the tree to fall Tuesday night in Hancock Park, a historic neighborhood in central Los Angeles.
