Man Who Allegedly Shot at Officers Killed in Cypress Park After Hours-Long Pursuit

The driver fired several rounds at the officers during the pursuit, police said.

A driver, who led LAPD on an hours-long pursuit, was killed in Cypress Park just after 2 a.m. on Sunday.

The pursuit started on the 110 Freeway near Avenue 26 in Highland Park just after 11:30 p.m. Saturday, when the driver in a blue pick-up truck failed to yield to a traffic stop, police said. The driver was initially wanted for assault with a deadly weapon.

The suspect led police down Griffin Avenue, south of the 110 Freeway, and up Daly Street going north, towards the 110 Freeway, officials said.

The driver fired several rounds at the officers during the pursuit, police said.

Police deployed numerous spike strips in the neighborhood of Lincoln Heights and Highland Park but were unable to fully disable the suspect's vehicle. Officials confirmed that police attempted to disable the vehicle with "controlled shots" fired at the vehicle and not directly at the suspect.

Just after 1:30 a.m., police used the PIT maneuver to stop the vehicle on the 500 block of West Cypress Avenue. Residents in the neighborhood were evacuated as a precaution.

Police officials confirmed that multiple shots were fired at the suspect, who was pronounced dead on scene.

No officers were injured during the pursuit.
