Man Rescues 3-Year-Old from Burning SUV

A 41-year-old man rescued a 3-year-old girl from a burning SUV, a California Highway Patrol officer said Thursday.

John Lynn McDonald stopped his vehicle behind an overturned SUV that was engulfed in flames around 1:30 p.m. Wednesday on the westbound San Bernardino (10) Freeway near Santa Anita Avenue, said CHP Officer Luis Mendoza.

Some occupants managed to get out of the SUV unharmed, but McDonald sprung into action when the female driver of the vehicle shouted "my granddaughter is still in the car," Mendoza said.

"Without hesitation, Mr. McDonald quickly entered the fully engulfed vehicle and rescued the 3-year-old girl, extricating her out of the wreckage," Mendoza said.

Everyone involved in the accident were treated at the scene for minor injuries, including McDonald, who sustained minor abrasions during his rescue, Mendoza said.

The cause of the crash was under investigation.
