Man With Knife Shot Dead After Charging at Officers: Police

A man with a hunting knife was shot dead after he charged at police officers in a neighborhood northeast of downtown Los Angeles Tuesday.

He was gunned down in an apartment building in the 3400 block of Manitou Avenue in Lincoln Heights at around 4:27 p.m, a Los Angeles Police Department spokesman said.

It has yet to be disclosed exactly how many officers fired on the man on a fourth floor breezeway. They had responded after a call was made by the man's wife that he was cutting himself.

"When officers made contact the suspect did have a knife in hand," LAPD  Sgt. Frank Preciado said. "The suspect was ordered to drop the knife. He did not. At that point the suspect advanced at the officers and an officer involved shooting occurred."

The man was taken to the hospital by paramedics, but later died.

Sgt. Preciado said the shooting appears to have been justified.

"Anytime that you're ordered to drop a weapon and you advance toward the officers… it's preservation of life."
