Residents in Southern California's mountains woke up to snow Friday morning as a winter weather advisory, indicating tough travel conditions, went into effect.
The advisory is in force in the San Gabriel Mountains in Los Angeles County and parts of Ventura County. The snow level will range between 2,500 and 3,500 feet, and between one to three inches of snow are expected amid north-to-northwest winds of between 20 to 35 miles per hour with 50 mph gusts.
Officials are warning drivers of slippery road conditions and advise motorists to exercise caution. Snow chains are highly advised in snow-struck areas.
In addition to the significant snowfall, winds of up to 25 mph are expected to hit the Los Angeles area. The Antelope, San Fernando and Santa Clarita valleys can expect to be struck by the gusts as strong as 45 mph.
The weekend is expected to be dry, but the beginnng of the next work week may be greeted with showers across the basin.
The winter weather advisory follows a week of significant forecast warnings in Southern California within the past week. Freeze warnings were issued for Los Angeles, Ventura, San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara County on Tuesday. A frost advisory was also issued Tuesday for San Fernando and Santa Clarita valleys.
