Whittier Residents Receive Calls from Fake Sheriff's Deputy Demanding Money

Several Whittier residents have received calls from someone pretending to be a sheriff's deputy and demanding thousand of dollars, officials said

Whittier residents are being warned about a phone scam in which the caller impersonates a sheriff's deputy and demands thousands of dollars to settle a fake violation, deputies said Sunday.

Several residents have reported received phone calls in which an impersonator told them they had missed jury duty and would have to bring $2,000 to the Whittier sheriff’s training center to settle the violation, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said in a news release Sunday.

The phone calls are part of a scam and the sheriff's department will never call a resident to demand money, deputies said.

Anyone who has been a victim in the Whittier area or who has questions about the scam is asked to call the Whittier Police Department at 562-567-9200.
