Search for Person Who Fled on Foot After Crash Kills 2, Hurts 5 in South Gate

Two people were killed and five people were taken to the hospital in a violent high-speed crash in South Gate Saturday, police said.

Police took one person into custody and were looking for another man who police said fled on foot from the crash.

Bryan Rojas, 22, was identified as a person of interest by Bell Gardens police.

The two-vehicle crash occurred just before 5 p.m. at El Paseo Street and S. Garfield Avenue.

A Mitsubishi carrying five people was turning into a shopping center when a speeding Mercedes struck them.

"We don't know if someone ran a red a light, but I can tell you speed was a factor," Sgt. Chris Dahlia of South Gate police said.

All five were trapped in the vehicle as firefighters worked to free them.

The driver and one of the rear passengers were killed.

Northbound lanes of Garfield Avenue were shut down as officials investigated.

Three people were in critical condition, and two others had minor injuries.

Police said Rojas suffered an injury to his forehead in the crash.

Anyone who spots Rojas is encouraged to call South Gate police at (323) 563-5400.
