1/1: Squirrel Nut Zippers

Brassy sounds rock the El Rey.

SQUIRREL NUT ZIPPERS: Besides having one of the most memorable, candy-riffic names in all of musicdom, the Squirrel Nut Zippers get our props for continuing to churn out truly za-zazzy tunes that boast both old-timey flair and dance-ability. And is that a pennywhistle we hear? A zither?  Probably. They're at El Rey tonight, and they've got a newish album called "Lost at Sea." Zowee!

LACMA STAYS OPEN: There's always the question of getting out of the house on a holiday. But what's open? The Los Angeles County Museum is keeping regular hours today, meaning you, and your want-to-see-a-bit-of-LA relatives, can wander the galleries from noon-9PM. Regular admission applies. Could we start the year with make-the-mind-grow art? We certainly could.

EXTENDED HOLIDAY HOURS: Downtown on Ice is also staying open for the holiday. In fact, the Pershing Square-located rink has made its opening times longer. New Year's Day will see skaters out twirling from noon to 10PM. That gives you enough time to check out the parade in the morning, and then head downtown for a little winter-esque playtime.
