Federal investigators are looking into what caused a single-engine plane to lose power after taking off from the Santa Monica airport Sunday.
The pilot tried to circle back and make an emergency landing but the plane skidded off the runway and broke in two.
The pilot, who is in his 80s, was the only one onboard the private plane at the time.
He was seriously hurt and taken to a hospital but was reported in stable condition Monday.
