Police fatally shoot man armed with knife in Northridge: LAPD

NBC Universal, Inc.

A Los Angeles police officer shot and killed a man they say charged at them with a knife in Northridge, the department said on Sunday.

The shooting occurred at about 11:10 a.m. in the 18400 block of Malden Street, said Officer Norma Eisenman of the Los Angeles Police Department's (LAPD) Media Relations Division. The department said officers were speaking with the man outside an apartment complex when he pulled a knife and charged at them.

In response, at least one police officer fired at the man, who died at the scene. LAPD did not say why they were initially speaking to the man.

The department did not identify the officers involved in the shooting, nor did they identify the deceased. Police did, however, describe the deceased as a man in his 20s. Neighbors told NBC4 he wasn't from the area but was visiting someone who lived nearby.

The investigation is ongoing.
