An off-duty fire captain pulled a person from a burning car in a wreck that shut down a stretch of the San Bernardino (10) Freeway near downtown Los Angeles.
Traffic was backed up on both sides of the 10 from City Terrace Drive east of downtown Los Angeles. The crash was reported at 9:39 a.m. in the eastbound lanes.
The Los Angeles County Fire Department said an off-duty fire captain suffered burns when he pullled a person out of the wreckage.
Footage of the scene showed the burned carcass of a passenger car. The front end of a white van with a logo for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority was burned.
The freeway was shut as crews sprayed absorbent material on the fuel spill spread out across lanes of the roadway.
All lanes were reopened after 10:30 a.m.
