One Dead in Long Beach Shooting, Suspect Shot

Police opened fire on the shooting suspect near a Long Beach fuel station

A shooting suspect opened fire on officers near a Long Beach fuel station after gunning down a man early Thursday in Long Beach, according to investigators.

Police heard gunfire at about midnight near the intersection of Pacific Coast Highway and Pacific Avenue, Long Beach police spokeswoman Lisa Massacani said. An officer in a patrol car located the suspect, who was walking away from the scene of the shooting.

"As one officer prepared to stop, (the suspect) turned and fired," Massacani said.

At least one shot struck the patrol car, and officers returned fire. The suspect was shot and hospitalized in critical condition.

A station attendant told NBC4 he heard at least nine shots.

The victim, identified only as a man in his 30s, was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Details regarding what led to the initial altercation were not immediately available.

Pacific Avenue remained closed for the investigation at 6:20 a.m.

No officers were injured.
