School Board, Council Seats Up For Grabs on Election Day

South Pasadena, West Covina, El Monte, Hawaiian Gardens, Hawthorne, Maywood and Montebello are among the cities asking voters to choose elected officials

Voters will head to the polls today in dozens of Southern California school districts and cities, choosing school board members, city council members and mayors, while deciding on a handful of ballot measures.

South Pasadena, West Covina, El Monte, Hawaiian Gardens, Hawthorne, Maywood and Montebello are among the cities asking voters to choose elected officials, while school board seats are up for grabs in more than four dozen school districts.

The Compton Unified School District is asking voters to weigh in on a proposed $350 million bond issue to modernize and upgrade various campuses with amenities such as research libraries, science labs, athletic facilities and technology centers. Walnut Valley Unified School District is asking voters to approve $208 million in bonds for similar upgrades.

The voters in the Las Virgenes Unified School District will decide whether to extend a $98 annual school parcel tax for another 12 years to bolster local education funds.

Voters in Hermosa Beach will weigh in on a proposed increase in the city's hotel bed tax, from 10 percent to 12 percent, while Malibu residents will decide whether to approve a development plan for the northwest corner of Cross Creek and Civic Center Way to allow for a 38,000-square-foot grocery and retail center.
