LAPD Investigating How Woman Was Slain While Under Police Protection

Police shot and killed a man who they say fatally stabbed a woman during a domestic dispute in the Mid-City section of Los Angeles. The night before, the victim had filed a domestic abuse report and police stayed outside her apartment to protect her.

The incident happened just before midnight near Cochran and Pico.

Officers responding to a 911 call saw the suspect stabbing Flor Medrano, 30, and "an officer-involved shooting occurred," said Los Angeles police Officer Bruce Borihanh of the Media Relations Section.

On Wednesday night, Medrano went to the Wilshire Division to report that she was a victim of domestic abuse, according to the LA Times.

Officers spoke to the woman and drove her back to her home near Cochran Avenue and Pico Boulevard.

According to the Times:

The victim went inside her apartment, and the officers remained outside, according to the sources, who spoke to The Times on condition of anonymity because the case is continuing. It's unclear whether the officers escorted the woman into the apartment and exactly how and when the attacker got inside, LAPD officials said.
