Man Who Reported Overdose Dies After Being Detained by Pico Rivera Deputies

The man reported that he had an overdose.

A man who reported he had overdosed died Monday in Pico Rivera after being detained and handcuffed by sheriff's deputies.

The death occurred about 4:30 p.m., according to Deputy Kelvin Moody of the Sheriff's Information Bureau.

The victim was taken to a hospital from the 9600 block of Slauson Avenue, Moody said.

"Detectives have learned that a Pico Rivera man called 911 to report to deputies that he had overdosed," Moody said. "Deputies responded to the 9600 block of Burke Street, Pico Rivera, and saw the man running from the location.

"The man ran into a business in the 9600 block of Slauson Avenue with his shirt off. An employee called Pico Rivera Sheriff's Station to report a man causing a disturbance inside the business."

Deputies located the man outside the business and saw him run into traffic on Slauson, Moody said.

They detained and handcuffed the man on the sidewalk and began CPR when he became unresponsive, Moody said.
