The world's largest professional surfing competition began Saturday right here in our backyard -- well, you know what we mean.
The U.S. Open of Surfing is a nine-day competition, July 31 through Aug. 8, at Huntington Beach near the pier. The competition boasts of the world's top surfers challenging fellow surfers and big Californian waves for a chance at $100,000.
The surfing begins each morning at 8 a.m. and concludes each evening around 5 p.m. Admission is free. Crowds are expected to exceed 500,000 over the course of the competition, according to the Los Angeles Times.
And what would a surf competition be without rocking bands? It would be just a surf competition, but the U.S. Open of Surfing is much more: Awesome concerts (Bedouin Soundclash, Cold War Kids, Switchfoot and Weezer). Festival fun (beachwear fashion shows, great merchandise to purchase and good food to eat). And as always great weather!
