Boy, 6, Shot at San Bernardino Party Remains in Critical Condition

Five shot in drive-by attack at birthday party

A drive-by attack on a crowd at a San Bernardino birthday party barbecue critically wounded a 6-year-old boy and injured four other people, police said Monday.

The boy was shot in the head shortly after 8:30 p.m. Sunday and remained hospitalized in "very critical condition," Lt. Jarrod Burguan said.

A 47-year-old man also was in critical condition with a chest wound, Burguan said.

About 50 to 60 people were in the front yard of a home when a white or silver car with chrome wheels pulled up, Burguan said. The vehicle had tinted windows and may be a Chevrolet Malibu, the San Bernardino Sun reported.

At least 10 shots were fired before the car sped away, he said. The gunfire left bullet holes in a parked car and a fence.

The 6-year-old did not live at the house but was attending the birthday party.

Another man was hospitalized in stable condition with a hip wound, while two other men were treated for shoulder wounds and released, Burguan said.

The identities of the victims were not released.

The motive for the attack was unclear, Burguan said.

"We don't even know at this point who the intended victim was," he said.

The attack took place in a neighborhood that is the home of a street gang but it was not clear whether the shooting was gang-related, Burguan said.

Only a handful of the partygoers had come forward to speak to investigators, he said.

"We have a number of people that are either saying they haven't seen anything or they're not cooperating at this point," Burguan said.
