A 10-year-old girl from Southern California arrived in Washington D.C. Tuesday to help push immigration reform.
Jersey Vargas, a Los Angeles native whose visit to Rome made headlines when she asked the Pope to help keep her father from being deported, plans to meet with lawmakers. She hopes she can also arrange a meeting with President Barack Obama.
"It gives me an honor because I’m representing millions of children who have their parents in jail or are immigrants or they’re undocumented," Jersey said. "The only reason why I’m here in Washington is to get immigration reform, that’s my mission."
Vargas’ father was taken into custody for driving without a license. She was reunited with her father after meeting with Pope Francis in Rome. She told NBC News that reuniting with her father made this Father’s Day extra special for Vargas.
Vargas will be in Washington D.C. until Friday.
