What to Know: Wildfires Burning Throughout Southern California

Extremely hot weather conditions and wind have played a role in the recent wildfires that have sparked across Southern California.

Massive clouds of smoke could be seen from throughout the region during days of triple-digit temperatures. Teams of firefighters have fought to contain these fires as soon as possible while also attempting to save any homes and buildings nearby that are being threatened by the fires.

Multiple agencies like the Angeles National Forest and CalFire have been monitoring these fires that have led to evacuations of some communities.

Here are some of the recent fires in SoCal:

Apple Fire 

  • Riverside County
  • 33,424 acres 
  • 95% contained
  • Destroyed 4 homes
  • The San Gorgonio Wilderness area remains closed to the public.
  • A portion of the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail was also closed to all traffic between the Cottonwood Trailhead, near the community of San Gorgonio, and Forest Road 1N01.

Lake Fire

  • Northern Los Angeles County
  • 18,526 acres 
  • 31% contained 
  • 12 structures destroyed
  • Evacuations still in effect for:
  • Lake Hughes Road west of Pine Canyon and north of Dry Gulch Road, east of Ridge Route Road, west of Lake Hughes Road and Fire Station 78, north of Pine Canyon and Lake Hughes Road, and south of SR-138.

Ranch Fire

  • North of Azusa
  • 3,050 acres 
  • 19% contained 
  • No longer threatening homes
  • All evacuations lifted
  • Road closures remain in effect for:
  • San Gabriel Canyon Road/Highway 39: closed at Northbound Hwy 39 at
  • Sierra Madre Avenue (southbound Highway 39 is closed at East Fork Road);
  • Glendora Mountain Road: closed from Big Dalton to East Fork;
  • Glendora Ridge Road: closed from Glendora Mountain Road to Mt. Baldy Road; and
  • Santa Anita Canyon Road: closed from Arno Drive to Chantry Flats Road.

Skyline Fire

  • Wildfire on a mountainside in the Cleveland National Forest just south of Corona
  • 51 acres
  • 85% contained
  • About 300 crew members from from Riverside County, Corona, the U.S. Forest Service and the Orange County Fire Authority were battling the flames
  • Evacuations lifted as of Thursday
