Hostage Rescued in Long Beach Standoff

A hostage was rescued early Monday in a standoff with an armed man who earlier stabbed a woman in Long Beach, according to police.

Police responded to the residence late Sunday in the 800 block of Washington Place. A woman suffering from stab wounds directed officers to a home where the assailant was holding another woman hostage, police said.

"They could see the suspect through an open door holding a female adult against her will with an unknown stabbing instrument to her throat," said Long Beach police Sgt. Brad Johnson.

Officers negotiated with the man for about 30 minutes before an officer opened fire. Officers entered the residence and removed the hostage, who was treated at the scene.

The attacker was hospitalized in critical condition. The stabbing victim suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Details about what led to the hostage situation and stabbing were not immediately available.
