What it means is this: if you believe that Proposition 8 speaks to the will of the voters, then a simple majority vote could also restrict marriage to further discrimination, ie, to only fertile couples of the opposite sex, or only to people of a specific race.
Sound unrealistic? Don't forget that up until 60 years ago interracial marriage was against the law in California. Although when that law was overturned, the racists didn't try and change the state constitution...
