5 South Gate Schools Locked Down During Police Search

Five schools were placed on lock down Thursday afternoon while police scoured a South Gate neighborhood for a man involved in a domestic violence incident.

Officers responding to the dispute approached the man, but he fled, leading police to set up a perimeter in the area of Nebraska Avenue and Long Beach Boulevard, the South Gate Police Department said.

South East High and Stanford Avenue Elementary were on lock down during the search. Southeast Middle, Stanford Primary Center and Montara Avenue Elementary schools were later locked down as well.

Classes were dismissed, but after school programs remained on lock down, with an estimated 100 to 200 students at each school, police said.

No further information was immediately available.
