Man Shot in the Head at South El Monte Gas Station Dies

Authorities Tuesday sought public help to solve the killing of a man who died at a hospital four days after he was shot in the head at a South El Monte gas station.

The crime occurred about 1:45 a.m. June 4 at a Shell station at Peck Road and Durfee Avenue, sheriff's Deputy Joana Warren said.

Jose Arroyo of Compton was hospitalized in grave condition, and he died on the night of June 8, the sheriff's department reported. His age was not immediately known.

Warren said the victim and a companion entered the gas station mini-market to purchase various items when the victim had a brief conversation with another man inside the store. Upon leaving the store, Warren said, the victim approached that same man's car outside at the gas pump, and he was then shot by a passenger inside the car.

The man who was pumping gas got into the car, and it sped off, Warren said. The car was described only as a gray hatchback. No descriptions were released of either suspect.

Anyone with information on the crime was urged to call the Sheriff's Homicide Bureau at (323) 890-5500.
