Mother Killed, Daughter Hospitalized in Hit-and-Run Crash

The vehicle flipped and hit a light pole on the 5200 block of Washington Boulevard

A 31-year-old mother of three was killed and her daughter was hospitalized Wednesday after her car overturned in a hit-and-run crash in the Mid-City area.

Authorities are attempting to determine whether the driver that struck the victim's vehicle was involved in a street race.

The vehicle flipped and hit a light pole in the 5200 block of Washington Boulevard at around 1:45 a.m, a Los Angeles Police Department spokesman said. An unidentified car was traveling at high speed behind the victim's car and hit it, causing it to lose control investigators said.

Another vehicle was also involved, and authorities are attempting to located the drivers.

Resident Manuel Savinon heard the crash from his home, and ran out to help.

"The baby was standing up on the mother and I just reached in and grabbed her and slowly pulled her out because I didn't know if she was hurt," Savinon said. "I just grabbed her away from the car because it was still smoking. She was holding onto her mother and didn't want to let go. I just snatched her away and ran away from the car."

The 31-year-old woman, identified as Angel Cobarrubia by the coroner's office, died at the scene. She is not believed to have been speeding or involved in the possible street race when the crash happened.

"Wonderful mother, three beautiful kids," said sister April Cobarrubia. "She really loved them with her whole heart. They're going to definitely miss her."

Another witness said he offered to pray with the victim as they waited for paramedics to arrive.

"It did break my heart," said Cedrick Mitchell.

The child, who is around 2 years old, was awake and breathing, and was taken to the hospital as a precaution. She is believed to have been in her car seat, but was flung from it due to the force of the crash. Her father is with her at the hospital.

Surveillance video was used to determine street racing was involved.

A witness claimed two cars were racing down the street when one overturned, however police could not confirm this was the case.
