Artists starving for colleague critique, a smooth place to draw and plenty of vodka tonics are finding a home at Casey's Irish Pub every Thursday night.
The "Drink and Draw Social Club" is drawing more and more local artists to the arty pow-wow, which promises to be a creative place and "just a fun time."
"And now it's spread all over the world," said founder Dave Johnson, who talked to Mekahlo Medina on NBCLA's NewsRaw. "Other people in other states and other countries started doing their own versions of it."
Its origins are not necessarily art centric. Dave just wanted some "Dave time" with his married artist friends.
"I realized, asking their wives for them to come out and have drinks once a week might be a little hard. So, I thought why don't we go out to bars that we like and draw," he said.
It worked. The wives said yes, and the "Drink and Draw Social Club" was born. Johnson, Dan Panosian and Jeff Johnson put together the Thursday night drinking parties, built the website, the Facebook page, and waited for the artists to come.
Over the past five years, the club found a home at Casey's Irish Pub on Grand Avenue, and the crowd continues to grow. Every second Thursday, the club hosts an Artwalk after-party that draws hundreds. It's so popular, Johnson and his crew created a "yearbook" of the different art created at the club. It's a mishmash of booze-inspired drawings and some sober pieces too. Whatever you want to call the art, Dave said it's the result of a good night of friends having a good time.
