Most state flowers are not like the official state cookies, or official state slogans, or the official state sweater vests.
Every official state thing makes an occasional appearance, somewhere, in some fashion, but we can all count on state flowers to physically cover a sizable portion of the states they represent.
Take California's own poppy. Come spring, say around March, those eye-poppingly orange petals start dotting many of our desert landscapes. Just there for the looking. Are you looking?
We've been keeping an eye on the Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve, which is a good daytime visit from Los Angeles. Recent pictures show poppies here and there, but, of course, there are many predictors and factors going, rain, weather, various conditions. But we keep watch, because we all want to see those photo-ready blankets of orange, punctuated by other flower-y hues.
You can keep updated here. There's a phone line and everything. And if you find yourself lately complaining too much about cubicle life, and freeway life, and life life, time to get out for a nature moment. Your state flower awaits your admiring. And you aren't required to wear your official state sweater vest to go see it.
