Weekend: Avocados to Oktoberfests - NBC Southern California

Weekend: Avocados to Oktoberfests

You and some guac. Then some more. Then some more.

Be the Toast of the Breeders’ Cup

CALIFORNIA AVOCADO FESTIVAL: Of all the food-laden festivals the Golden State hosts, this is really one of the most famous, no doubt. But avocados are kind of a superstar fruit, right? Sliced or smooshed with sour cream, tomatoes, garlic and salt, they are perfect. You can enjoy that perfection from Oct. 1-3 in Carpinteria. Oh, and Amtrak has details on getting up there, if you don't want to guac and not drive.

OKTOBERFESTERY IS AFOOT: We'd exaggerate if we said there's practically an Oktoberfest on every block this weekend, but there are parties going on in Huntington Beach, Torrance, Lake Arrowhead, and Montrose. The last two are the latest entries on the fall 2010 schedule; Arrowhead will last through Oct. 30, weekends only, and Montrose is just on Saturday, Oct. 2.

UNDERWOOD FAMILY FARMS HARVEST FESTIVAL OPENS: It's the lucky 13th year for this large but still quaint autumn party. We like the food, the tractor-pulled hay ride, and the corn cannon. Oh, and the tomato slingshot! Splat. And those photographable goats walking on ramps overhead. In Moorpark Oct. 1-31.

dineLA RESTAURANT WEEK KICKS OFF: The fall 2010 version. As with past Restaurant Weeks, this one's a fortnight, except for a Saturday off in the middle. "Dozens upon dozens" doesn't go far enough to describe the quantity of participating eateries; you'll just have to look at the list yourself. Oct. 3-15 (Oct. 9 is off)

ALSO: Superheroes; buccaneers; and cowboys galore.
